Ralph Macchio Rules

LAST NIGHT AFTER dinner we settled down with the whole family and watched...The Karate Kid. Yes, the 1984 classic starring my wife's former boyfriend (boyfriend here being defined as 'having his posters all over my walls when I was 13') was a gift from Kerri's parents and I have a feeling it will now become a favorite around this house. I say this because our own kids had the same reaction to the movie that I remember having more than twenty years ago: the first hour after watching the movie is spent trying to master the 'crane kick' from the final scene. Even little Henry (not yet 3) was standing on one leg with the other one bent at the knee and his arms high in the air.

It's funny, Kerri and I find ourselves trying to monitor what our kids watch in terms of movies and DVD's. In an effort to stay clear of the modern 'kids' movies like Spiderman, Pirates of the Carribean, and Harry Potter until they are a bit older, we have found ourselves letting them watch movies that were popular when we were kids (ET, for example). And to be honest, it's been as much fun for us as for them. I probably haven't seen The Karate Kid in 20 years and I'm going to bet that most of you haven't either. This weekend we're going to watch Star Wars -- the original 1977 version, not those over-animated, over-hyped, prequel-peices-of-rubbish that came out recently. I can't wait.

Any other suggestions for us? I'm trying to convice Kerri that the kids should see Breakin', and Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo but so far she's not buying it. Come on, those are classic films that defined a generation.

OH. MY. GOD!!!

No one suffered through Kerri's Ralph Macchio obsession more than some of us … who shall remain nameless ... though she's presently typing this post.

Do you know, she made me watch all his movies, including Outsiders, and I had to sit there while she sobbed and sobbed when Pony Boy, or Tommy Boy or whatever dumb boy he was died--coughing, wheezing and gurgling, I might add--of his burns. And it was I, I’m sad to relate, who had to watch her and John do the crane kick on the sidewalk in front of the theatre (in public, no less) directly after seeing that movie the first time. And then again I who had to look at her room wallpapered with all those posters, and watch her kiss them (YES YOU DID, KERRI! I think your wore off the mouth on one of them). And I think she also bought out the Ralph Macchio iron-ons at that seedy T-shirt shop in Ocean City and then I had to look at his cracked face on her dumb shirt every week—which of course, she wore UNDER her sweatshirt cuz we weren’t allowed to wear them to school. Needless to say, there was lots of lifting of the sweatshirt whenever she could.

Should I go on, or don’t I have enough of your heart-felt sympathies?

But, to be fair, I've already let my boy watch Karate Kid--and then HE was doing the crane kick all day and I was immediately sorry I'd given into my nostalgia.

What’s the matter with you Kerri not letting them see Breakin’? We LOVED those (and then pretended we could pop when we really couldn’t because of our Adventist Rigamortis).

Ask her to rap, J. Ask her to start off with these four words: “New York, New York…”

Nice one, j perry. Kerri is now laughing so hard there are tears streaming down her face. Julia just asked "are you crying, mommy"? And by the way, thanks a lot for reminding her about the rap -- that's all I've been hearing for the last hour. I'm going to shoot myself.

I cannot believe you still know that whole rap after all these years (and I'm truly sorry J, because I really do know your pain)but then again, *I* know that whole rap after all these years from hearing it so many times.

Do you remember our field trip to Gettysburg in 8th grade? I don't remember a thing the tour guide told us, but I sure do remember you "New York, New Yorking" beside me(and then showing off to Tiki and Chandra).

"Down by Lor"??? I thought so too 'cept I just looked it up and it's "down by law"

Down by Lord sounds better. See? You DO have some "flow."

BTW, Honie LOVED seeing her name on the computer. She thinks she's special now.
